FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology)
Is a non-profit organization which was founded by Dean Kamen in 1989. Kamen is better known for his invention of the Segway Human Transporter and other medical scientific breakthroughs. Gracious Professionalism is when the epic competition and mutual gain are not separate philosophies. Gracious Professionals compete in the manner as if the stakes are high. Yet they respect and show empathy to one another. FIRST encourages its participants to promote cooperation by solving challenges together. This organization hosts an annual competition in which over 900 teams from all over the world, over 20,000 students all around the world, compete in an intense competition, which is a test of innovativeness and stamina.
Each team designs and manufactures a robot designed to participate in a type of sports game, the rules and games of which are changed every year and require the robots to have certain functions that allow them to compete. The robots must be built within a period of six weeks, and then the robots are used in competitions which are hosted all over the country. Participants are shown the process of design, fabrication, assembly and testing, as well as repair and troubleshooting; and have the opportunity to use CAD (computer aided design software) and programming languages (labveiw, C++,Java, ect…). The programs used are excellent tools that the involved engineers and corporate sponsors use to prepare the next workforce.
