What is FIRST Robotics Competition?

For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, FIRST is a non-profit organization founded by Dean Kamen in1989. Kamen is better known for his invention of the Segway Human Transporter and other medical scientific breakthroughs. "Gracious Professionalism," a passion for achievement and respect for others, is actively encouraged at FIRST. FIRST encourages its participants to promote cooperation by solving challenges together. This organization hosts an annual competition in which over 900 teams from all over the world, over 20,000 students around the world, compete in an intense competition, which is a test of innovativeness and stamina. Each team designs and manufactures a robot designed to participate in a type of sports game; the rules and games change every year and require the robot to have certain functions in order to compete. The robots must be built within a period of six weeks and then the robots are used in competitions which are hosted all over the country. Participants are shown the process of design, fabrication, assembly and testing, as well as repair and troubleshooting and have the opportunity to use CAD (computer aided design software) and programming languages (LabVIEW, C++,Java, etc). The programs used and skills learned are excellent tools and experiences which prepare the next generation of innovators. Team 2813 is proud to be a U.S. FIRST team.
